Blink Nutritears: a dry eye supplement
Blink Nutritears is a relatively new dry eye supplement I found. This review provides information on the ingredients used in this supplement and compares it to Lacritec.

Blink Nutritears: Targeted Nutrition for the Tear Film
Following our look at systemic management with Lacritec, we now turn to another clinically backed oral supplement: Blink Nutritears. While many supplements on the market use broad-spectrum vitamins, Blink Nutritears focuses on a specific, patented blend of ingredients designed to improve the health of the ocular surface and enhance tear production from within.
Understanding how Blink Nutritears differs from other options requires a look at its unique formulation and the clinical data that supports its use.
The Formulation
The core of Blink Nutritears is built around a specific combination of lutein, zeaxanthin, and curcumin, alongside high-quality Omega fatty acids.
1. The Macular Carotenoids: Lutein & Zeaxanthin
While often associated with retinal health, these carotenoids play a surprising role in dry eye management. Lutein and zeaxanthin are powerful antioxidants that accumulate in ocular tissues. Research suggests they help protect the ocular surface from oxidative stress caused by blue light and environmental pollutants. By reducing oxidative damage to the lacrimal glands and corneal epithelium, these ingredients help maintain a more stable environment for tear production.
2. Curcumin (Turmeric Extract)
Curcumin is the primary active compound in turmeric and is a cornerstone of Blink Nutritears’ anti-inflammatory strategy. Chronic dry eye is fundamentally an inflammatory cycle. Curcumin is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that inhibits multiple inflammatory pathways (including NF-kB and COX-2). When combined with fatty acids, curcumin helps dampen the "burning" and "stinging" sensations associated with ocular surface inflammation.
While curcumin is a potent inhibitor of inflammatory markers like NF-kB in laboratory settings, its systemic bioavailability in humans is notoriously poor. It is rapidly metabolized and excreted. While Blink Nutritears likely uses a specialized form to improve absorption, there is limited independent ocular research proving that oral curcumin reaches the lacrimal glands in high enough concentrations to alter tear chemistry significantly.
3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA)
Like Lacritec, Blink Nutritears includes high-quality fish oil. As established in the TFOS DEWS II Report, Omega-3s provide the building blocks for healthy meibum (the oily layer of tears). They help reduce the viscosity of the oil produced by the meibomian glands, ensuring it flows more easily onto the eye to prevent evaporation.
Research Evidence:
In randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled trials, patients using this specific blend reported a significant reduction in dry eye symptoms (as measured by the OSDI - Ocular Surface Disease Index) in as little as 2 to 4 weeks. The study showed a measurable increase in natural tear production, suggesting that the supplement helps the lacrimal glands function more efficiently. Users often report improved comfort during digital device use, likely due to the combined protective effects of the carotenoids and anti-inflammatories on the ocular surface.
Our Verdict:
Blink Nutritears is an excellent choice for patients looking for a comprehensive, anti-inflammatory approach to dry eye. Is it better than Lacritec? There's no direct comparison studies at this stage. My personal preference is still for Lacritec. Blink Nutritears contains EPA and DHA Omega 3 oils, but it lacks the Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) that provides an enhanced anti-inflammatory benefit seen in Lacritec. I also don't think oxidative stress is the main problem in dry eyes so while oxidative stress certainly causes inflammation, I just don't know if that's a major factor in dry eyes.
